The Domestic War Commences: Die Verschworenen and Die Winterreise

Hello reader,
This is Andrew Weinstein, writer of the blog Music with Maestro Weinstein. I am a senior Music History Major at Hofstra University. As a member of the Hofstra Opera Club and Hofstra Opera Theater, it is my duty to inform you that starting January 30th thru February 1st, we are presenting a double bill of Schubert opera and lieder. The first half will be Die Verschworenen (Der HaĆ¼sliche Krieg), a one act opera based on the Greek comedy Lysistrata. When a General refuses to stop fighting wars, his wife gets all the military wives to abstain from showing their husbands affection. The second half will be selections from Die Winterreise, a song cycle about a man dealing with the depression of wintertime. There will be a future post about the production design and concept.

However, before the performances, there must be work. That is why during January, you can expect posts written by other members of the cast, crew, and musicians. They will give their thoughts  on opera, the rehearsal process, and Schubert. Personally, this is my second opera as a member of the chorus and fourth year involved in Hofstra Opera Theater (two years pit orchestra, two years chorus). This will be both a new and old experience for me. It's a special opportunity to be responsible to help others who have never done this before. Over the next month, we will learn, create, and discover. Hope you join us for the ride.

Best Wishes and Good Music,
Andrew Weinstein
